In the 68th minute of the game, the Chicago Fire scored their first and only goal of the game against Chivas USA. But it wasn’t a goal scored by the Fire, exactly. Chivas’ Forward Eduardo Lillingston headed a corner kick from Fire Midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco into his own goal.
The victory secured Chicago’s fifth consecutive appearance into the Major League Soccer Cup playoffs. The team will hold the second seed in the Eastern Conference. The Chivas loss also allowed defending MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew to take the Supporters’ Shield, an annual award given to the MLS team with the best regular season record. The Fire’s opponent in the playoffs will be determined this weekend as six teams battle it out for the two remaining spots.
