Cannes, Toronto, Sundance. Distribution deals, good-and bad-reviews and audience excitement can follow premieres at these film festivals. But fans don’t have to travel to see the best new releases and art films. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Chicago International Film Festival, and this weekend is opening weekend. We talk with festival programmers Mime Plauche and Alex Kopecky about some of the highlights from this year’s schedule, and what the festival’s five decades in the game has taught them about the movie business.
