The only two vehicle emissions test facilities in Chicago are closing down at the end of the month. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says no motorist in Illinois will have to drive more than 12 miles to get their vehicle tested, and the changes are part of a package that will save taxpayers at least $11 million dollars a year.
But the closures caught the Chicago Department of Transportation off guard. That agency called them shortsighted. WBEZ’s Miles Bryan has details.
