The union for Chicago police officers says adding more civilian oversight will make it harder for them to fight crime. Mayor Rahm Emanuel is proposing a new agency to replace the Independent Police Review Authority. That agency would handle more types of complaints about cops, like accusations a search was improper … or that a suspect’s access to an attorney was denied unlawfully. The Fraternal Order of Police says the city should leave those sorts of beefs to the police department’s Internal Affairs Division. It also objects to a proposed police watchdog unit within the city’s Inspector General’s Office.
