Chicago saw its highest mold count in the city’s history this week, and doctors say that means trouble for people with allergies.

Dr. Joseph Leija takes official measurements of mold and other allergens for our region. He said high humidity coupled with no rain is to blame for the unusually high amount of mold spores in the air this summer.

Leija said mold spores typically peak in September or October, but the unusual weather means people are feeling hay fever symptoms a little early this year.

“Patients with allergies, you know, they will have runny noses, sneezing, congestion, and stuffy noses,” Leija said.

And that means more people are stocking up on allergy medication this week — at least at one drugstore in the city.

Ed Braxton works at the Walgreens on Division St. in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood.

“They’ve been buying, you know, all sorts like Sudafed, Benadryl, different type of allergy nasal mists, stuff of that nature,” Braxton said. “Now, don’t get me to go down through the details.”

Dr. Leija said the best remedy for allergy sufferers is to stay indoors where there’s air conditioning.
