In rural China, millions of parents migrated to cities to live full time. They moved to earn significantly more money than in their home villages, but many left their children behind. As a result, thousands of children are dropping out of school. Migration, along with China’s now defunct one-child policy, caused huge population dips that forced many primary schools to close. Similar to Chicago, neighborhood or village schools in rural China are becoming something of the past. We’ll talk about China’s school dropout crisis with Wen Huang, a Chicago-based writer, journalist, and human rights advocate. He’s author of the books The Little Red Guard and A Death in the Lucky Holiday Hotel: Murder, Money and an Epic Power Struggle in China.
