The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month each year, the night of a full moon. This year that is September 19th. During the festival it’s tradition for the Chinese to give each other a pastry known as mooncakes. The Peninsula Hotel in Chicago is paying homage to the Chinese festival and included are unique take on the traditional Chinese sweetcake. Peninsula mooncakes are notable because they were one of the first, if not the first, to replace traditional heavy lotus paste and duck yolk filling with delicate egg custard, a challenging pastry accomplishment. Created by Chef Yip Wing Wah in 1986, they’re often copied by other chefs. Teddy Leung, manager of Chinese food and beverage operations for The Peninsula Hotels, tells us why their mooncakes shouldn’t be missed. (Photo: Flickr Ban Ban)
