Last week, Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe passed away in Boston at the age of 82. In 1958, Achebe published Things Fall Apart, a novel that for the first time expressed the confrontation between traditional African culture and colonialism from the point of view of Africans. Achebe proved to be the first in a long line of successful writers to come out of Nigeria. Worldview speaks with Ernest Emenyonu, a professor of Africana Studies at the University of Michigan in Flint, the editor of African Literature Today, and a Nigerian from the same ethnic group as Achebe. He’ll tell us about Achebe’s legacy and discuss the state of Nigerian literature today. (Photo: AP Images)
