In April 2002, the “Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Review Procedures) Act” took effect in the Netherlands making euthanasia in the country legal. Dutch law requires that a doctor must consult with a second doctor before approving a death request. Four thousand Dutch choose to die by euthanasia each year. The procedure is carried out by licensed doctor. But now a group called “Life End Clinic” is receiving patients who’ve been rejected by standard protocol - a great number are psychiatric and dementia cases. Hans Kema from National Dutch Television, who reports on end-of-life issues for the show Nieuwsuur (Newshour Television), tells us how Life End Clinic has revealed more of the gray areas of Holland’s euthanasia law.
