In the 1970s, musician Andre Gibson was studying at Columbia College’s audio engineering program. The program was new and he needed musicians to record in the studio to help refine his skills and complete the curriculum. He knew some musicians that would be a perfect fit: his bandmates. As leader of the Universal Togetherness Band, Gibson and his band got to record their brand of avant-garde, psychedelic rock in free studio space while students could complete their studies. Universal Togetherness Band’s music was largely forgotten until Jon Kirby of Numero Group discovered it on a music and dance show on cable access. Kirby tracked down Gibson and Numero Group is now behind the release of music from the band. Kirby and Gibson join us to share the story of this unique sound, and we hear tracks from the album.
