Conservative talk radio host and blogger Bryan Fisher believes America is in peril — thanks to a pro-homosexual crusade. And, he would like children of same-sex couples to be “saved” — via kidnapping — in a new kind of Underground Railroad.

At least that’s what he said Tuesday, clear as day, in the exchange above. In other words, he thinks that kids growing up in same sex households — no matter how loving or supportive — are in imminent peril.

Thursday afternoon, Fisher walked it back a bit: “The bloviating left has come completely unhinged, hysterically and ludicrously accusing me of supporting kidnapping raids on homosexual households to snatch children from their beds. I, of course, have suggested no such thing.”

Except that he did. What else could he mean by his response to the critic above that suggested his proposal was kidnaping? On his show Wednesday, he had, in fact, re-affirmed the need for his kind of Underground Railroad.

The root of all this is a custody case between two women over their child, after the gestational mother had a Christian religious conversion and chose to flee to Central America with the child rather than share custody with her former partner.

The case is in the news right now because the Amish-Mennonite pastor who facilitated the flight to Central America is being tried in Boston this week for aiding a kidnapping.

Fisher writes about the case in the blog post I linked to above, adding a variety of flourishes about the lesbian non-bio mom that are a litany of queer stereotypes: abusive, indifferent, sexually aggressive (no other news outlet, even conservative outlets, have reported any of this). Fisher leaves out most of the damning evidence against the now Christian mom, including her suicide attempts, which were detailed in a New York Times story a few weeks ago.

Think Fisher’s just some right-wing nut? Indeed he is, but he’s also an incredibly influential right wing nut, profiled just two months ago by the New Yorker. Earlier this year, he was instrumental in getting Mitt Romney to drop Richard Grenell, a former Bush spokesperson, as a foreign policy adviser for the simple reason that Grenell is gay. The Southern Poverty Law Center considers the American Family Association, where Fisher is the director of issues analysis, to be a hate group based primarily on Fisher’s statements.

Consider these gems:

* “Homosexuality gave us Adolph Hitler, and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine and six million dead Jews.”

* “What is the cause of what we know as AIDS? What is the cause of this condition that is killing people? [The] answer can be found in one word: drugs. And specifically, drug use connected with the kind of sex that is far too common in the homosexual community. While the average heterosexual has somewhere between seven to 14 sexual partners in a lifetime, it is not uncommon for homosexuals to have hundreds, even thousands, of sexual partners.”

* “In all the discussions about the European settlement of the New World, one feature has been conspicuously absent: the role that the superstition, savagery and sexual immorality of native Americans played in making them morally disqualified from sovereign control of American soil.”

* “The purpose of the First Amendment is to protect the free exercise of the Christian religion … It’s very clear that the Founding Fathers did not intend to preserve automatically religious liberty for non-Christian faiths.”

This is hatred, yes — swaddled in a convoluted religious wrap.

But it is also — and far more importantly — stupidity. Stupidity of the deepest, most ignorant and dangerous kind.
