Almost a dozen people were shot and a 16-year-old girl was gunned down during a drive-by; she was not the intended target and police have made no arrests in the shooting. But Chicago is rich with programs designed to provide resources, stabilization and safety to residents across the communities. This summer we’ve tried to go beyond the headlines and shine a light on existing programs many residents may not know are available in their back yards. Today, we learn more about an organization on the South Side that’s been providing a myriad of programs and resources for a decade and of an initiative on the West Side called “Fathers Who Care.” Joining us to discuss are Rev. Johnny Banks, executive director of A Knock at Midnight and Rev. Walter Jones, Associate Pastor New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church and executive director of Fathers Who Care. Plus, Eliza Fournier the Director of the Chicago Botanic Gardens’ Windy City Harvest Youth Corps, discusses teaching Chicago area students about the benefits of sustainable urban farming.
