Each year, thousands of people who can’t have babies on their own flock to India, Russia, Ukraine, and other countries where hiring a woman to carry a child to term is legal. According to some estimates, surrogacy is a $2.5 billion industry in India alone. As some countries begin recognizing privileges for same-sex couples, the landscape for international surrogacy is changing.
