Cook County Commissioners took the first steps Wednesday to repeal the controversial sweetened-beverage tax. Commissioners heard from constituents, medical experts, and health advocates as to why the penny-per-ounce tax on sweetened drinks should stay put. They say sugar contributes to health problems and the tax will change buying habits. But opponents say people will just take their business to neighboring counties or to Indiana. Board President Toni Preckwinkle says that the county needs the tax to help fund government services. The measure to repeal the sweetened-beverage tax will be heard by the finance committee next month. Democratic Commissioner Richard Boykin is confident the votes are there to repeal it.
