Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s $4.4 billion budget proposal includes about 300 layoffs, and a penny-per-fluid-ounce tax on soda pop and other sweetened beverages.
Three commissioners told me they were undecided about the beverage tax— Richard Boykin said he’s pitching a tax on ride-hailing services like Uber instead.
And in Tuesday’s finance-committee hearing, Commissioner Bridget Gainer proposed eliminating the county’s animal control unit, maybe letting the Sheriff’s office take it over. When asked, a couple of other commissioners said they would not favor closing animal control.
