The Chicago Police Department has pledged to hire to more officers that quote “represent the communities it serves.” But according to city data, white cops make up 41 percent of hires since the start of 2016 — that’s compared to 14 percent for African-Americans and 36 percent for Hispanics. CPD First Deputy Superintendent Kevin Navarro says that’s partly because the city is still hiring cops who applied before the department’s diversity campaign was in place. Navarro says the department provides training to help potential recruits pass the physical test and credit check that are required to become a cop.
