Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when it was invaded by Turkey. The island was essentially partitioned, with one part inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the other by Greek Cypriots. Attempts to reach a peace accord to reunite the island have been unsuccessful in the past, but now it appears there may be some progress. Then, “Carol,” which stars Cate Blanchett, tells the story of a married older woman who falls in love with a young salesgirl. The film is nominated for several Golden Globe awards.
