Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when it was invaded by Turkey. Turkey invaded in the north, responding to a coup that was backed by the Greek government. The island was essentially partitioned, with one part inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the other by Greek Cypriots. Attempts to reach a peace accord to reunite the island have been unsuccessful in the past but now it appears there may be some progress. The Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders have agreed to try and increase the frequency of their UN brokered meetings in the coming weeks, in the hopes they can reach a comprehensive peace agreement.
