1. Porchlight’s love Sondheim continues, as they launch Putting It Together, a revue of his work to start off their 17th season going up at the beginning of September. The revue modernizes Sondheim’s work a bit, as the actors sing songs in what’s supposed to be a West Loop apartment. It’s directed by Brenda Didier, with music direction by Austin Cook. This season, they’ll also be doing tick, tick…BOOM and A Catered Affair.
2. Krapp’s Last Tape is at Signal Ensemble Theatre. If you cried during Pixar’s Up (who didn’t?), this one probably won’t be much better, in that it’s also about an old man. The play was also at the Goodman last winter.3. The Artistic Home Acting Studio is wrapping up their Cut to the Chase festival (their 10th year) this weekend, which workshops one-acts and original pieces. Whistling Past. The Graveyard One-Acts has a few highlights, including Purity Ball by Aline Lathrop, which is probably about what you think it is, and Last Chance by Jim Lynch, about a salesman who sells burial plots. You might notice that it’s all about death.
4. SUPER delayed, but I lost this piece until I found it; the New York Times discusses the cost of bringing a show to Broadway. They use the example of Betrayal, a production that went up in London, whose producer says that though the show is doing well there, “on Broadway these days, even with a movie star, it’s very hard to survive.” She also says her current play Jeruselum will not make back all its costs.5. The Chicago Human Rhythm Project started its 21st annual Rhythm World festival of tap and percussive arts yesterday. In March, the Project found a new home courtesy of a grant provided by the MacArthur Foundation. There are a variety of events in the next two weeks, including residencies and a variety of classes.
