Chicago Mayor Richard Daley wants the City Council to approve a third Wal-Mart that would be located in the city’s Chatham neighborhood.

In 2004, the City Council rejected plans to bring a Wal-Mart to Chatham. Technically, Mayor Daley could have his top city planner sign off on the project. But Daley says he instead wants aldermen to approve the store, and he wants them to do it by next week.

DALEY: Like anything else, you want people to stand up on their own two feet. When they get elected to office, you have to make some tough decisions.

Daley also says he has not talked to union leaders. Aldermen last month approved the city’s second Wal-Mart. That store will be built on the Far South Side. Some aldermen were hoping they wouldn’t have to vote on any more Wal-Marts before next winter’s aldermanic elections.
