Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he needs the support from the next president of the United States to bring the 2016 Olympics to Chicago.

He says the city will have to get involved in global politics if it wants to host the Summer Games.

The mayor says that’s why New York’s bid to host the 2012 Olympics failed.

“You just can’t go alone and face in the reality of international global politics,” Daley said. “That is a very, very significant issue there. And that’s why New York only had 15 votes. 13 or 15 votes. And they spent $50 million.”

Daley recently returned from Beijing, China, which will host the 2008 Summer Games.

He says Chicago is better-suited to host the Olympics than Beijing because Chicago already has many of the necessary sports structures and transportation hubs.
