Last year Facebook introduced more than 50 customizable options for gender. The change came about after users reported they don’t fall within the binary option of male or female. Now, more and more people are also defining their sexual and romantic identities with terms that go beyond the common categories of heterosexual, gay and bisexual. A recent Huffington Post article listed 12 of these labels — including skoliosexual, demisexual and lithromantic. Dr. Brandon Hill is the executive director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health at the University of Chicago and has a background in sexual and gender identity research. He explains what the terms mean and who’s using them. (Flickr/Brett Sayer)
