Isis has claimed responsibility for an attack on the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas. An organization known as the American Freedom Defense Initiative was hosting a cartoon contest featuring depictions of the Prophet Mohammed. The American Freedom Defense Initiative is run by Pamela Geller, a blogger who became known for her campaign to prevent a mosque from opening near Ground Zero and her activism to prevent what she calls the “ creeping Islamization” of the U.S. She says the event in Texas was about protecting free speech. The Southern Poverty Law Center has been tracking Geller and her group for several years and calls it an “active anti-Muslim group.” The SPLC also has Geller in their extremist files. Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center joins us to talk about how they determine what is considered simply offensive and what is categorized as extremist or hate speech.
