A lot’s been said about 1st Ward Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno versus Chik-fil-A, except for the most obvious thing to me: Since when did a plain chicken sandwich from Atlanta become so important to Chicago?

Especially when the proposed site lies within a nine-minute walk from one of our most important culinary epicenters: our very own Vienna Beef Factory — complete with store and café. The esteemed food and wine writer William “Bill” Rice once said on a hot dog tasting there with the late, great R.W. Apple, “It’s like tasting Guinness in Dublin.

Chef Art Smith is hosting “A Chicken Fry for Equality” fundraiser for Equality Illinois at his home this Sunday, July 29, with his husband, the artist Jesus Salgueiro, reports my colleague Ari Bendersky at Eater Chicago. Smith’s Table Fifty-Two serves his famous fried chicken Sundays and Mondays only.

The Hearty Boys, partners Dan Smith and Steve McDonagh, will host a “Chick-Fil-Gay Appreciation Day” August 1 at their restaurant Hearty. They’ll serve Chik-fil-A-style sandwiches: fried chicken breast on toasted buttered buns with pickles only, plus and a side of fries for $10. “100 percent of the proceeds will go to Equality Illinois for marriage equality.”
Look for similar but “socially conscious chicken sandwiches” — plus biscuit, thigh, and hot choices — from Leghorn, by Chef Jared Van Camp and his Nellcôte team. Read all about it in an interview by my friend Michael “Sky Full of Bacon” Gebert at Grub Street Chicago.
In the meantime, eat mor hot dogz.
