On Friday, Joaquín Guzmán Loera - the Mexican drug trafficker known as “El Chapo”, was recaptured by Mexican authorities. He had been on the run for months. Guzmán’s famed escape from a Mexican prison - considered cinematic by many - was a source of embarrassment for the Mexican government. Now, even his capture is immersed in celebrity. Parallel to Guzmán’s capture, Rolling Stone magazine released a feature on the drug lord. While Guzmán still eluded authorities, actor and activist, Sean Penn, interviewed him for Rolling Stone. Meanwhile, Washington has started extradition proceedings to bring Guzmán to the U.S. for trial.
