Egypt has undergone political change in the last year and the military regime running the government is sending strong signals about which way its heading: Twenty journalists have been put on trial; a court banned all activities for the militant group Hamas and army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, looks poised to announce a run for president, giving credence to fears that Egypt may be headed back to the days of deposed president Hosni Mubarak. Ashraf Khalil is an Egyptian-American and an independent foreign correspondent. He’s the author of Liberation Square, a book about the Tahrir Square protests that overthrew Mubarak.
