Federal prosecutors are expected in court today, to ask a judge for more time to get an indictment of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. And there’s more. They also want the okay to share some of their evidence with state lawmakers who are considering impeaching the governor.

Prosecutors charged Blagojevich in early December on a criminal complaint. Federal law gives them 30 days to get an indictment from a grand jury. But what they’ll argue is that the case is too complex to meet that deadline, plus the holidays interfered.

They want Judge James Holderman to give them 90 more days (until early April) to bring an indictment. Their filing says the governor’s defense attorneys don’t object to the request for an extension.

Meantime, in a separate motion, prosecutors will ask the judge to let them pass on to state lawmakers some of the recordings they made by wiretapping the governor’s phone calls. The Illinois House appears to be on a fast track as it considers the case for impeaching Blagojevich. The governor denies doing anything wrong.
