Chicago police officers raided an apartment complex on the west side and arrested 47 gang members.

The arrests come after a two year undercover operation.

Phil Cline is the superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.

He says the gang members were making around $15,000 a day by selling drugs.

“People are willing to take risks to make that kind of money and we’re hoping that by taking cases to federal court where the mandatory minimum here is 10 years, it’s going to discourage people. But it isn’t a police problem alone. There’s other things: education, housing, jobs. All that is involved in here but we’re making progress but we got a long way to go,” Cline says.

The defendants are allegedly members of the New Breeds street gang.

They’re expected to appear Wednesday morning in court.
