Director Margaret Byrne has spent the last 6 years of her life filming in Bertie County, North Carolina. It’s a rural, often-neglected, predominantly African-American region of the state.

Byrne focuses her lens on three young men trying to navigate that difficult space between childhood and adulthood in a world defined by the slow pace of life, deep family ties, and limited opportunities. We talk to Byrne and producer Ian Kibbe about Raising Bertie shortly after the local opening of the film.
