This past Monday, we heard from Jo Becker, advocacy director of the Children’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch, about the threats facing the world’s most vulnerable children. Issues like child marriage and lack of access to education are not new, however. In 2002, at a United Nations special session of the General Assembly on children, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan rebuked the nations in the room for their failure to adequately protect children. In this segment, from exactly 17 years ago today, we hear Annan’s remarks, as well as Becker’s response. To skip to Becker’s remarks, begin listening at 20:42.
