Last year Germany passed legislation guaranteeing all children starting at age 12 months a spot in subsidized daycare. Public spending on childcare was also a top election issue. It turns out that in many ways, the decision to spend more public funds on daycare owes its roots to policies that were put in place in East Germany, when the country was still divided. This Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. We’ll take a look at the impact of communism on the attitudes toward women, work, and childcare in Germany with Elizabeth Heineman, a professor of history is a professor of history, women, gender and sexuality at the University of Iowa.
