Earlier this year, 7 out of 10 Americans responding to a Gallup poll said they like the idea of federal money going to universal pre-kindergarten. Meanwhile, a lot of European countries have already done that, and more. Germany has made affordable day care a national priority. WBEZ’s Alexandra Salomon was in Hamburg this year as part of a fellowship—and she decided to find out more about Germany’s approach to subsidized child care and how it’s playing out.
