Nate Henssler is a rising chef in Chicago’s culinary scene. The restaurant he co-developed, Portsmith, opened last year to wide acclaim. Amid today’s political climate, Henssler realized that most of his restaurant staff are immigrants, or have children in Chicago Public Schools. He wondered how he could give back. For today’s Global Activism series, we talk with Henssler about an event he’s calling the “La Besita” benefit dinner at Portsmith. La Bestia, Spanish for “The Beast,” is nicknamed for the route many immigrants take through Mexico, from Central America, to the U.S. The first dinner takes place on January 17th and benefits groups that meet at the intersection of public schooling and immigration. One beneficiaries will be the Mariachi Ensemble at Benito Juarez Academy in Pilsen. Henssler joins Worldview to discuss what motivated him to start these dinners.

La Besita Dinner is Thursday, January 17th, 6pm at Portsmith Restaurant: 660 N State St, Chicago, IL 60654. Tickets are at Yelp Reservations.
