For our Global Activism segment, we catch up with long-time Global Activist Julie Siegel. She’s an Evanston-based landscape architect, environmentalist and founder of the NGO Sustainable Sharing with Guatemala. Along with running her sustainability-based practice, Julie Siegel Designs, she partners with the Integral Training Association for Integral Development (AFOPADI), a Guatemala-based group that works on sustainability and social justice issues. Siegel frequently visits Guatemala to bear witness to the hardships Guatemalans face as they grapple with climate change, and struggle for human rights and social justice. Joining Siegel is Veronica Girón, Guatemala coordinating team leader for AFOPADI. She teaches sustainable farming practices to indigenous, rural and mountain communities to help “create a diverse society where relationships between people and nature are based on respect and positive attitudes.”
