Land grabs in developing countries are not an uncommon story in the media. Corrupt or under-developed governments, along with multinational corporations, have bought or taken millions of acres of land from people ranging from affluent farmers to indigenous tribes. But the research NGO, Oakland Institute, has a new report, Down on the Farm: Wall Street: America’s New Farmer, which finds that “Over the next 20 years, 400 million acres, or nearly half of all US farmland, is set to change hands.” Anuradha Mittal, executive director of the Oakland Institute, will tell us why she believes with Wall Street leading the way, global forces have its sights set on U.S. land and how this may change the way we live.
