Erik Alejandro Rodriguez, also known as Cimafunk, combines Cuban, Nigerian and American Funk and Soul music to get his audience up and dancing. His debut album Terapia was released in 2017, and he is currently in the middle of his first-ever tour of the U.S. He performed at Chicago’s Martyrs’ bar on Tuesday night and takes his talents to the Old Town School of Folk Music Wednesday night. For this edition of Global Notes, Cimafunk speaks with Catalina Maria Johnson about his recent buzz-generating SXSW performance and why his music leaves listeners unable to sit still.
