This week on Global Notes with Morning Shift and Radio M host Tony Sarabia we listen to the latest release from Songhoy Blues.

The quartet fled their home in Timbuktu music making was forbidden by the Islamic insurgency and formed the band in southern Mali.  The group is influenced as much by traditional Malian and Tuareg traditions as it is by western rock, R&B and hip hop.

The “desert punk” group enlists none other than the Godfather of Punk, Iggy Pop, on their second release, Resistance. The album is filled with searing guitar solos, dance grooves and traditional Malian instruments — the ngoni and kora. The title refers to the fight against the negative headlines that typically come out of Africa.
