Hugh Masekela has been making music professionally since 1954. He picked up the trumpet after seeing the movie, Young Man with a Horn, starring Kirk Douglas. From the very beginning, Masekela’s music reflected not only the struggles of black South African’s during the darkest days of Apartheid, but also the joys of his country. Masekela is perhaps the last world renowned living link to those early days of Apartheid. He brings his artistry to Chicago Old Town School of Folk Music for two shows Friday. We explore the music and life of Hugh Masekela on this week’s edition of Global Notes. (Photo: Flickr/Ottawa International Jazz Festival)
