This week on Global Note we bring you music from a place in Morocco; Jemaa El Fna, which can be translated to mean “the rendezvous of death.” But the music is very much alive. Some of the instruments are powered by car batteries and amplified by megaphone speakers. The music from this Marrakesh square is featured in the compilation “Ecstatic Music of Jemaa El Fna.” It includes everything from aggressive thumping rhythms and fuzzy vocals to piercing mandolin and banjo strings. We’ll give you a taste of the beautiful mayhem. (photo: cover art for the album, Ecstatic Music of Jemaa El Fna)
