In this week’s installment of Global Notes, we’re joined again by DJ Daniel Moose to discuss an up-and-coming record label based out of Washington, D.C. Sol Power Sound is self-described as “a sweaty, exhilarating party experience that connects beats from Cuban roots to the beaches of Rio to the discos of Lagos to the warehouses of Detroit and Chicago.” Launched in 2015 by three DJs and one percussionist, Sol Power blends sounds from the entire African diaspora. The acoustic instrumentals, rhythms, and vocals beg for dance. One of the tracks features remixes samples of a Babtoni, a massive one-stringed Malawian bass instrument. Daniel, who moonlights as an engineer at WBEZ, shares four of his favorite tracks from Sol Power.
