A group is claiming that the managers of a large apartment building in Uptown illegally tried to clear out elderly, low-income tenants who were immigrants.
According to the Jane Addams Senior Caucus, Horizon Realty Group discriminated against at least 18 seniors by unilaterally raising their rents and attempting to coerce them into signing new agreements on the spot — when many could not understand the English-only documents. The tenants are all immigrants or refugees from the former Soviet Union, Vietnam and Cuba.
The group has filed its complaint with the Chicago Commission on Human Relations.
This article originally misnamed the body which received the housing complaint. It is the Chicago Commission on Human Relations.
