The Escobal Mine in Guatemala is the third largest silver mine in the world. In the community of Santa Rosa de Lima, there has been broad local resistance to the mine since 2010. The community’s biggest concern is over the safety of their land, food and water. We talk with Llan Carlos Davila from the group Diocesan Committee for the Defense of Nature (CODIDENA). It was formed by parishioners’ of the Diocese of Santa Rosa Church based on Catholic social justice teachings. Davila says state security forces and private security firms, in support of mining companies, have used force and violence against community leaders and activists who’ve opposed the mine. Joining Davila is Ellen Moore, Guatemalan program coordinator for Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala.
