Last month, Helsinki Mayor Jan Vapaavuori started a campaign promising one million euros to anyone who devises an energy production method to replace coal burning in his city. In fact, Finnish law prohibits the use of coal for heating and electricity after 2028. Finland is also the only country in the European Union in which homelessness rates are falling. It is in this context that Vapaavuori has stated that he wants his city to have the world’s most functional government. He joins Worldview to talk about what it will take to get there, focusing on sustainable growth and digitalization. Prior to serving as mayor, Vapaavuori was a member of Finland’s parliament from 2003 to 2015.
