The U.S. gained control of Guantanamo Bay in 1903. We’ll take a look at the history of Guantanamo with Alberto Coll, professor of law at DePaul University. U.S. Republican lawmakers have proposed legislation that would slow the release of prisoners from Guantanamo. We’ll talk about the proposed legislation with Andy Worthington, an investigative journalist and author of “The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison”. He’s also co-founder of the ‘Close Guantanamo’ campaign. Mount Sinjar in Iraq made news as ethnic Yazidis fled to the mountain for safety from Islamic State. U.S.-backed Kurdish forces along with U.S. airstrikes reportedly “liberated” the Yazidis. We’ll get an update from Christine van den Toorn, director of the Institute for Regional and International Studies at The American University of Iraq-Sulaimani (AUIS).
