The United Nations estimates that in urban areas alone about 1.1 billion people live in inadequate housing conditions and at least 100 million people have no housing at all. Despite these large numbers the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals do not specifically address the issue of homelessness. Next week, policymakers from countries around the world including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, and the U.S. will gather in Chicago to discuss the issues and help develop recommendations for addressing the problem globally. Kat Johnson, director of the Institute of Global Homelessness at DePaul University and Ashwin Parulkar, project head of the Knowledge Centre on Urban Homelessness at Centre for Equity Studies in New Delhi, join us to talk about how different countries address the growing problem of homelessness.
