The US Department of Housing and Urban Development is taking on a bigger role in shaping efforts to integrate neighborhoods across the country. The agency announced a new rule yesterday that requires communities who get federal dollars to keep track of housing patterns based on race and class and to come up with ways to reduce segregation. Some say this is federal overreach but supporters contend all the rule does is clarify what’s required under the Fair Housing Act.
