A few months ago our summer intern Ben Craig pitched us a story about a new sport he’d heard of in downstate Illinois. Apparently some creative sportsmen had taken to shooting invasive Asian carp with bows and arrows. He was interested in doing a photo essay on the new sport, but alas- he never had time to take a trip downstate to do the story. Now doncha know, the old gray lady has gone and done it herself. Check out this video, it’s pretty interesting (though for the easily squeamish, be forewarned- there is a good amount of blood and speared fish). Could bowfishing be a lasting cultural contribution of Illinois?
