Indiana State Police are investigating a police shooting in Hammond. 

Hammond police said officers were called to a home in the 1500 block of 177th Place about 7:20 p.m. Sunday after a 33-year-old man had threatened suicide. 

Police said the man pointed two guns at officers outside the home. At least one officer shot the man in the neck, police said.

The man was taken to a Northwest Indiana hospital, where he is recovering.

Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. said it is standard procedure to request an outside agency to investigate police shootings. 

“If you have a police shooting, the last thing you would want to do is have your own detectives investigating their colleague. It’s normal for us to refer it out. Sometimes we go to the county sheriff,” McDermott said Tuesday. “Sometimes we go to the state police. I think it’s the most transparent thing that we can do.”

Each of the more than three dozen communities in Northwest Indiana has its own policy for investigating police shootings. 

Indiana State Police Sgt. Ann Wojas said the agency will investigate a shooting if requested.
