Just weeks after his election, India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, gave a speech addressing issues India’s women face. He said the country was “shamed” by increasing reports of rape and sexual assault. Modi called on families to take responsibility for their son’s actions and broached the issue of female infanticide. Shweta Singh, a researcher at Loyola University-Chicago, is working on a documentary about women’s issues in India, Confounding Traditions of Modernity, Urban Indian Womanhood. She joins us to discuss the film and some of what life is like for India’s women.
