While it may not seem surprising that small town hospitals around the state can look like ghost towns, even Chicago is struggling to fill its medical facilities. A Crain’s Chicago Business investigation reveals how some of the city’s older hospitals are scattered with empty beds while new state of the art medical centers are popping up in the suburbs. One of the reasons these buildings don’t close or consolidate depends on how they are paid, but demographic shifts play a role as well. Crains’ Kristen Schorsch reported on the story and she shares more about the findings. (Photo: Flickr/gregorywass)
